What is the Public Interest:

When cases deal with broad public policy concerns or public values as set out in the Canadian Human Rights Act, they have a particular significance for the Commission. Its role is to represent the public interest in an impartial and objective manner at all stages in the dispute resolution process.

The Commission's work involves eliminating and preventing discrimination against individuals but also ensures the Public Interest is served.  This entails correcting persistent patterns of inequality, preventing discrimination, informing the public about equality and identifying emerging human rights issues.

Some of the tools at the Commission’s disposal which can help transform societal behaviour are information sessions, promotion of discrimination prevention, research on emerging trends and other preventive measures such as special reports to Parliament.
