Human Rights in Canada: An Historical Perspective

Minorities

January 1, 1925

No Entry
Discrimination is still rampant and immigration laws, at least those against Asians, have become more restrictive.

Chinese immigration is now restricted to students coming to Canada for university study, and to Canadian-born Chinese children who are returning to Canada.

A law requires East Indians to come to Canada by continuous passage. As no ships sailed directly from India to Canada, all Indians are effectively barred.

Asians and Indians are excluded from the federal and provincial franchise in British Columbia, and status Aboriginal people can't vote federally or in most provinces.

There are no laws or court decisions to prevent businesses from denying services on account of race or colour. Homosexuality is still illegal. Most people in the white majority hold negative images of minorities.
