Women's Rights
January 1, 1925
Women are the big winners in the years since 1900. In most provinces,
married women have secured the same legal property rights as men. More
importantly, women have finally won their battle for the right to vote
in federal and provincial elections (excluding provincial elections Québec).
Parliament has elected its first female MP, and equality between the
sexes is closer than ever before.
There are still many obstacles, however. Fewer opportunities than men,
unequal pay, discrimination in employment - and the inability to be appointed
to the Senate or to take full part in political life - continue to frustrate
those women seeking equality and fair treatment.
Women make up about 15% of the total paid work force, about 4% of the
managers, and about 52% of the "professional" occupations (including
teachers and nurses)
On average, women earn about 54% of what men earn.
