Human Rights in Canada: An Historical Perspective

Persons with Disabilities

January 1, 1975

As people with disabilities have always known, a disability may be a challenge, but it doesn't have to be brick wall.

Now, after years of neglect, the laws have begun to catch up with the achievements of people with disabilities.

Human rights codes such as Nova Scotia's in 1974, forbid discrimination based on physical disability.

Ontario's 1970 Blind Person's Rights Act recognizes the special needs of persons with disabilities, although things do not always go smoothly in practice.
